This Baroque masterpiece is also known as “Coronation Anthem No. 4” and was composed for the coronation of King George II and Queen Caroline. It was first performed on Oct. 11, 1727, in Westminster Abby. The texts of the four movements are taken from passages in the Old Testament (Psalm 45: 1, 9, 11 and Isaiah 49: 23), but when set to Handel’s music, the character of the Georgian era comes to life.
